Grant Gottgetreu is a trusted forensic consultant and retired police corporal offering services for traffic offences. Over a career spanning three decades, Grant earned a formidable reputation as a prolific and tenacious enforcer of traffic law. Today, Grant is sought after for his singular expertise by lawyers on both sides of the courtroom as well as organizers of high-profile conferences.

Grant spent 28 years working for the West Vancouver Police Department, the RCMP Integrated Road Safety Unit for the Lower Mainland and the New Westminster Police Department. A natural affinity for traffic investigations and enforcement led to him developing an in-depth knowledge of the highly specialized area of law. As of June 2018, he holds the record for issuing more excessive speeding tickets in a year and in a career than any other officer in BC. His prolific exploits earned him various nicknames – some from angry motorists which were intended as insults – including Darth Radar and the Robot Vulture.

He was several times named a member of Alexa’s Team, a select group of police officers from the Lower Mainland who are recognized by the Insurance Corporation of BC and Mothers Against Drink Driving for removing a high number of drivers from the road for impaired driving.

Grant’s training goes back to 1987 and two years later he joined the police force. Throughout his career he became proficient in a wide array of speed detection devices. After becoming a qualified operator, he rose to the position of Master Instructor in all modes of police radar and laser/lidar devices, training other officers in the correct procedures for using the various instruments. He is recognized at Provincial Court as an expert in police radar. He also teaches trainees how to make visual speed estimations of moving vehicles.

He also has extensive experience in impaired driving investigations, becoming a qualified technician in 1992 and an ASD operator, calibrator and instructor since 1990.

Over the course of his career he trained officers in a variety of traffic related courses in the following police agencies:

  • West Vancouver
  • Royal Canadian Mounted Police
  • Port Moody
  • Delta
  • New Westminster
  • Abbotsford
  • Saanich
  • Vancouver
  • CP Police
  • First Nations Tribal Police

He created a training program called “Surviving Traffic Court” which was designed to help officers when prosecuting their tickets in traffic court.

Grant retired in 2017 and he now uses his expertise as an independent consultant for both defence and Crown counsels on any traffic related matters. He provides forensic analysis, expert information and independent testimony to present the right evidence before the court. He is also in demand as a keynote speaker at conferences.

Over the years he noticed a lot of lawyers in traffic court often overlooked key evidence. The success rate for defence lawyers in traffic court is much lower than it is for them in criminal court, often because the standard of proof needed in order to uphold a ticket is much lower.

That’s where Grant comes in. He knows the questions lawyers should be asking in their disclosure packages. His technical analysis of the criminal allegation is different from testimony offered by scientists. He speaks from a policing background where he managed to reach the top of his field.

This makes Grant a rare and persuasive asset to the case of any client. Email gottgetreuconsulting@gmail.com
